Kyle Wright poured in 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half Tuesday at the Tiger Center in leading Texas High past former district rival Marshall, 62-55.
The Tigers roared out to an early 13-5 lead in the first four minutes of the game, never trailing afterwards. Texas High improves to 11-4 on the season, and will be back in action Friday at home against Commerce.
“It was a very physical game; it was rough at both ends of the court,” said Texas High coach Keith Jones. “We got out to a lead on them, and they’d make runs at us. Fortunately, we were able to build it back up. I thought we got a little sloppy at the end, but it might have been the physicality of the game that made it look that way. I know we didn’t take care of the ball, and didn’t play smart at the end of the game.
“We pushed the ball up the floor fairly well, and did a good job on the boards. We did miss some easy shots, but I’m pleased overall. There were a lot of emotions out there tonight. These two teams don’t like losing to each other.”
All five Texas High starters scored in the first quarter, but it was Wright’s ball-handling and shooting that enabled the Tigers to build a 35-27 lead at intermission. Octavien Richardson came off the bench to hit two treys in the second quarter, while C.J. Kelley pulled down 10 of his 16 rebounds. THS edged the Mavericks on the boards, 43-37. Cole Drumm had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, matching Kelley’s totals.
Savion Williams led the Mavs with 16 points, while teammate Khalil Wallace contributed 13 points and 16 rebounds.
Liberty-Eylau boys, girls prevail
Kentraile Atkins scored 22 of his 24 points in the first half Tuesday at the Rader Dome, leading Liberty-Eylau (10-3) over Jefferson, 81-66.
The Leopards exploded for 46 of their points in the first half to build a 10-point cushion. Senior Isaiah Cross contributed 12 points for the winners, while Talvevion Cooper added 10.
The Lady Leopards played at Mount Pleasant, cruising past the Lady Tigers, 63-46. Senior Kyla Coston poured in 23 points for L-E, including six treys. Kayla Norris tallied 15.
