Tigers bang out 15 hits in series opening win over Lufkin, 13-5

Texas High’s Luke Smith started on the mound in the Tigers’ bi-district opener with Lufkin.

LUFKIN, Texas – Texas High scored the game’s first seven runs, and the last six Thursday night as the Tigers won their 5A bi-district opener over Lufkin at Morris Frank Park, 13-5.

“We came out swinging the bats early,” said winning coach John McClure. “Robert Cheney came in relief, and performed well down the stretch. Friday will be a new day, and the score will be 0-0.”

Lufkin pitching struggles in series opener

The Tigers outhit Lufkin, 15-5. Luke Smith and Nate Mennie led Texas High’s fireworks with three hits each. One of Smith’s hits was a double, and he drove in three runs. Rian Cellers also drove in three runs with a double.

Ben Depriest, Jackson Halter and Nathan Steele had two hits each for the Tigers. Smith started on the mound, yielding five runs in the third inning.

The winner of this series will face North Forney or Ennis.
