The Pleasant Grove Hawks are gearing up for the Region Final against Pittsburgh Friday night at The Star in Frisco.
The Hawks beat the Pirates 45-20 during the regular season. This time there is a lot more at stake. A trip to the state semi-final awaits the winner of this huge game.
Before we preview the contest, let’s look at last Friday’s be win over the Gilmer Buckeyes at Allen Eagle Stadium in the Dallas area. PG Coach Josh Gibson was thrilled with the effort. He says, “We played great in all three phases of the game. Our running backs rushed extremely hard. They and the offensive line put pressure on the Gilmer defense.”
Bruce Garrett had another big night as he continues to step up during the playoffs. Garrett rushed for 175 yards and QB Ben Harmon completed 12 of 14 passes for 266 yards and five touchdowns. Running back James Wiggins rushed for 82 yards. Wide receiver Sergio Rodriguez led the Hawks in receiving with catches for 125 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, linebacker Nick Martin led the Hawks with 12 tackles. Bladen Reaves had nine tackles. Caleb Hemphill had seven tackles.
The game was interrupted by two lightning delays. The first delayed the start by 30 minutes. The second even lengthier delay came at halftime. Gibson says his team dealt with the situation well.
Gibson says, ” Our goal is to handle everything better than our opponent. I think our kids remained focused and hungry.”
Now Pleasant Grove tackles Pittsburgh at The Star . Gibson believes both teams have grown and gotten a lot better since their first encounter.
“When two REALLY good teams play, you have to beat the opponent and can’t beat yourself. We can’t have turnovers, penalties or missed assignments. If we do that, play more physical than Pittsburg and win the special teams battle, I believe we will be in good shape, says Gibson.”
