The Pleasant Grove Hawks finished their 2021 baseball district season with an 11-inning 6-4 win at Gilmer Monday night. After 2 rain outs, a 25-minute delay waiting for umpires and a grueling 3 and 1/2 hour pitchers duel ; The PG Hawks finally wrapped up district with a win. It wasn’t easy.
Gilmer Buckeye coach Josh Riley and Hawks coach Riley Fincher both said before the game that it was simply a warmup for the playoffs. However they both said they still wanted to win. They weren’t kidding.
Eleven pitchers played in Monday’s game
Gilmer (18-11-1, 8-7) used 6 pitchers and Plesant Grove threw five. JM Long, a sophomore from Plesant Grove (23-6, 12-3) ended up being the winning pitcher for Plesant Grove. The game featured a combined 11 pitchers from both teams. They allowed 9 hits in 11 innings. That’s 9 hits total for both teams combined.
Hawks junior right fielder Alex Galvan led all batters in the game. Galvan was 4-6 with a double and an RBI. Galvan would have been 5-for-6. However, he had another double erased after Gilmer appealed at first and the umpire ruled he missed first base.
“It’s always good to good a win in district,” Pleasant Grove head baseball coach Riley Fincher said. “I thought all of our pitchers did a good job of competing.”
Fincher said that the Hawks need to keep improving offensively.
“As a staff, we are proud of the fight our players showed tonight by responding in the late innings,” Coach Fincher said.
The Plesant Grove Hawks have a 3-game bi-district playoff series vs. Lindale. Game 1 will be at Plesant Grove Hawk Filed Thursday night at 6 p.m. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m. at Lindale, game 3 if necessary will follow game two. Pleasant Grove’s playoff series games will be broadcasted live on 94.1 FM ESPN-Texarkana and on the Radio Streaming Now APP.
Gilmer’s 3-game bi-strict series will be vs Springhill.
