Texas High graduate Peyton Sims is the first recipient of the “Johnny Green Sports Writing Scholarship.”

Peyton, editor in chief of the Tiger Times (school newspaper), will use her scholarship to attend the University of Texas in Austin. She is one of six Texas High graduates to have already earned an Associate’s Degree. Peyton plans to graduate, and remain at Texas to get her Masters.

In addition to her academic achievements, Peyton was also a member of the Tigers’ golf team. She also enjoyed fishing with her parents Jack and Hollie Sims.

The “Johnny Green Sports Writing Scholarship” was created after the passing of the legendary Sports Director of the Texarkana Gazette in February of 2020.

A native of Hooks, Texas, Green worked for the Gazette 48 years before retiring in 2011. Afterwards, he was a part-time employee for TISD. He kept statistics at football games, the scorebook at basketball games, and counting pitches during baseball games.

Johnny Green was a 2-time Employee of the Year at the Texarkana Gazette, and Palmer Newspaper Employee of the Year. He won hundreds of writing awards. Texarkana Mayor Bobby Bruggeman made July 11, 2011, “Johnny Green Day.” Local radio guru Bob Delgiorno inducted Green into his Fox Sports Fan-Fest Hall of Fame in 2015.

Johnny and Karen Green were married 55 years.
