SULPHUR SPRINGS, Texas – Liberty-Eylau sent Kaufman’s starting pitcher to the showers early, and Leopard junior Gage Bellatti rewarded his teammates with a three-hit performance in beating the Lions, 5-2.
The win comes a day after the two schools had their 4A area best-of-three series postponed. The series resumes Saturday at 1 p.m. in Sulphur Springs, the Leopards needing one more win to reach the regional quarter-finals.
“Gage Bellatti was outstanding, and we were able to chase their starter out early in the game,” said L-E coach Zach Fowler. “Kaufman has a good ball club, and they will come out ready to play Saturday.”
Leopard junior needs 81 pitches to win
Bellatti gave up two unearned runs in the fifth. He only needed 81 pitches to beat Kaufman, walking two and striking out five. He also contributed a single at the plate.
Colby Brooks drove in three runs with a single and sacrifice fly. Braylon Blair was the only Leopard with two hits. Nate Moore had a run-scoring single. Ron Garza, Xander Worthy and Zach Brush also had singles.
The only eye-sore for the Leopards were the three errors they committed.
