

EMORY, Texas – Maud’s baseball team persevered Saturday. The Cardinals earned a rematch with District 17-2A champion Rivercrest in the Region III-2A quarter-finals.
The Cardinals edged Gladewater Union Grove in Game 3 of their best-of-three area series, 6-5. Maud won the series opener Thursday, 4-1. The Redbirds lost Friday’s second game, 11-1.
Maud excited about rematch
“Super proud of the way our kids fought today,” said Maud coach Drew Davenport, a former standout himself for the Queen City Bulldogs. “Our pitchers came out and competed today, and I can’t ask for more. Even though the boxscore may not show it, we had some quality at-bats today, and grinded it out for the win.”
Rivercrest defeated Maud twice during the regular season, and is 4-0 in the playoffs so far. The Cardinals entered the postseason as the fourth seed out of District 17. The upset District 18-2A champion Como-Pickton in the first round.
