The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the use of deadly force by an Arkansas State Trooper Thursday in Jackson County, Ark.
An Arkansas State Trooper shot 42-year-old Sjon Woods after he disregarded law enforcement commands to drop his handgun, which was aimed at police, according to a statement from the Arkansas State Police.
Woods was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is listed in serious condition. No officers were injured.
At approximately 1:00 p.m. Thursday, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department dispatched deputies to a residence on Jackson County Road 76 east of Swifton.
In initial statements provided by the sheriff’s department, a Jackson County deputy made contact with Woods, who was armed with a handgun and allegedly fired the weapon into the ground.
Swifton Police, Tuckerman Police, and Arkansas State Troopers responded to the location after learning of the situation. That is when, according to police, Woods would not respond to law enforcement commands to drop the weapon and pointed the gun at officers.
The state trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Criminal Investigation Division will submit the investigation for consideration to the local prosecuting attorney, who will determine whether the use of deadly force was consistent with Arkansas laws.
